Public & Societal Benefit (34.58%) includes areas of community improvement, volunteerism, unemployment, employee associations, military and veterans’ support, neighborhood associations, some life insurance providers, cemeteries and foundations.

Human Services (27.01%) tackle some of the region’s most pressing issues, including child welfare, shelters, food and nutrition, public safety, disaster response, youth development and employment.

Organizations by County

More than three-fourths (75.66%) of KC nonprofit organizations are located within Jackson, Missouri, and Johnson, Kansas, counties. The breakdown of organizations per county correlates closely to population size.

Compared to similarly sized metropolitan areas, Kansas City’s nonprofit density is mid-range. The claim that there are too many nonprofits is easily debunked.

A total of 263 new organizations were formed in the 6-year period of 2012 through 2017. The Public & Societal Benefit (34.58%) and Human Services (27.01%) categories added the most organizations. Two small categories, International & Foreign Affairs and Environment & Animal-Related, experienced the highest growth rates.
